Good news for Guillermo del Toro, who was writing a sequel to Pacific Rim with Zak Penn without any assurances it would get made, will have his work rewarded because Legendary Pictures is indeed financing it and releasing it on April 7, 2017.
The prolific filmmaker took to Legendary's YouTube channel to make the announcement (see below) as well as stating there will be an animated series and the continuation of the comic book prequel, Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero.
What made the prospect of a sequel a tenuous situation was the weak box office domestically. The growing influence of the global marketplace was its saving grace as it earned 75% of its worldwide gross from foreign receipts. The worldwide gross was $411 million with $111 million from China alone.
It doesn't hurt that audiences still have an appetite for monster movies if Godzilla is any indication. No word if the original actors will return but its still early in the process so look for updates.
