COMIC BOOK DAY: Notable New Releases 4/8

New comics 4/8 by Slidely Slideshow

A new week of awesome comics brings a monumental event at DC Comics with the beginning of their Convergence event. They've shrewdly brought back some fan favorites like Stephanie Brown and Rene Montoya as they converge characters from the DC multiverse. Check out Convergence titles for Batgirl, The Question and others while also following Convergence series by Scott Lobdell. There's plenty more out today if you're not into big publisher deck chair shuffling.

Brand new offerings include The Four Points #1 also by Scott Lobdell and Jordan Gunderson, Rebels #1 by Brian Wood and Andrea Mutti, IX Generation: Hidden Files #1 by Matt Hawkins and Stjepan Sejic, Jungle Girl Season 3 #1 by Frank Cho, Doug Murray and Jack Jadson. We also get a double dose of Mark Millar with his new series with Wilfredo Torres, Jupiter's Circle and the trade that collects Jupiter's Legacy, he did with Frank Quietly.

If previews were any indication, Reanimator #1 by Keith Davidsen and Randy Valiente, is highly anticipated. There's been a lot of site traffic on the preview we did and it should sell very well.

Todd McFarlane debuts Savior with Brian Holguin and Clayton Crain.

Two collections from DC Comics drop today - Sensation Comics featuring Wonder Woman, Vol. 1 and Harley Quinn Vol. 2: Power Outage (Hardcover) by Amanda Conner andJimmy Palmiotti.

As far as outstanding on-going and mini's go everything starts with Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. A title so good it doesn't even bother to provide any solicitation description about what it's about. The excellent Descender #2 from Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen continues, Rat Queens #10 by Kurtis Wiebe and Stjepan Sejic is an all-out battle, Big Man Plans #2 Eric Powell and Tim Wiesch is brutally exciting,  Hawkeye #2 by Jeff Lemire and Ramon K. Perez is a race against time, Copperhead #6 by Jay Faerber, Scott Godlewski and Ron Riley begins a new arc, Five Ghosts #16 by Frank Barbiere and Chris Mooneyham conjure up more excitement.

Looks like another great week in comics, support your local comic book shop today!

Written by Todd McFarlane and Brian Holguin. Art and Cover by Clayton Crain. What if the MOST DANGEROUS man on Earth was also the one trying to do the MOST GOOD? The world is real. The people are normal. And then he appears! A man appears with no background, no memory, and no place to call home. But he has powers. Powers that seem resemble those we learned about in Sunday School. Could it be?! Is it possible that this man is much, much more than that? Is it possible that he is our 'SAVIOR' in the flesh? And if he is, then why doesn't he know who he is or how he got his powers? Strip away the spandex and trappings of the traditional comic superhero and ask yourself a simple question: 'How would I react if GOD suddenly appeared in front of me, but everything we had been taught about him seems out of whack?' What you would have left, beyond your own doubts, is the presence of a man who has to deal with the fact that his appearance in the world is seen as both a blessing and a curse. Some will see him as a hero, a messiah. Other will see him as an enemy because there isn't room for a person with god-like powers to disrupt the status quo of what we already believe. Some will rally behind him. Others will denounce him. But none of us will be able to ignore him. Cover price $2.99.

Written by Ian Flynn. Art by Matt Herms & Various. Cover by Tracy Yardley and Matt Herms. When Dr. Eggman sponsors a go-kart race around Sonic's Island home, you know that dude is up to no good. The rules are as follows: no special powers, no weapons, and everyone has to drive a kart to keep things fair. Since when does Eggy care about 'fair'? What will happen to throw this race into a SPIN? How many rhetorical questions can we ask in one paragraph of solicit text?? Find out in this hyperbole-packed issue! Cover price $3.99.

REVIEW: 'Wonder Woman '77 Meets The Bionic Woman' #6 by Andy Mangels and Judit Tondora

The series has been great fun but for fans of the original Wonder Woman TV series starring Lynda Carter and the Bionic Woman starring Lyndsey Wagner it's been a time machine to what could have been when these two iconic heroines meet.

WONDER WOMAN '77 MEETS THE BIONIC WOMAN #6  Writer: Andy Mangels Artist: Judit Tondora Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment Release Date: September 20, 2017 Cover Price: $3.99
Score: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
Andy Mangels and Judit Tondora have put together a sprawling crossover event that faithfully captures the tone and aesthetic of the 1970's shows. Often complicated and full of exposition, the camaraderie between Diana and Jamie is genuine and to see them in action makes the cover price worth every penny. Bringing together not only the titular heroes but incorporating their respective supporting characters like Wonder Girl and combining villains was no easy feat but Mangels and Tondora pull it off with enthusiasm and precision.
The plot to use Fembots to…

WONDER WOMAN OF THE DAY: Fitness Model Gia Macool Embodies the Amazon Princess

The closest we'll ever get, probably, to superheroes in real life is through the great work of cosplayers. You see them at every pop culture convention from the very basic to extremely elaborate costume design. However, you don't have to be a cosplayer to enjoy dressing up as your favorite superhero from time to time. Take fitness model and entrepreneur Gia Macool for example. An accomplished fitness competitor and model, Macool is also a big fan of DC Comics' Wonder Woman. She shows her love of the iconic Amazon Princess in her fitness wear, meal prep accessories and even a full blown photo shoot in a Wonder Woman costume.

For decades comics have featured very muscular superheroes, male and female, epitomizing the human form at its strongest. So when bodybuilders and fitness pros decide to suit up as these costumed heroes, they are the embodiment of those fictional characters in the flesh. Macool looks like she stepped out of the pages of a Wonder Woman comic with a suit …

Fitness Women in Superhero Body Paint by J.M. Manion

J.M. Manion has long been a successful photographer covering the fitness and bodybuilding industry. He has photographed some of the strongest, well-defined physiques on the planet. He's also had a love of super-heroes and comic books. So much so that Manion began publishing his own comic book, Iron Siren Comics, featuring some of the fitness competitors he's covered as superheroes themselves. It's no wonder he sometimes incorporates superhero cosplay and body paint into photo shoots. Here are just some examples of his work:

CROSSWIND #4 Writer: Gail Simone Artist: Cat Staggs Publisher: Image Comics Release Date: September 27, 2017 Cover Price: $3.99

He's got to play Mr. Randolph against Cason now and it's sure to set some deadly actions in motion. Meanwhile, back in suburbia, Cason just set Juniper's husband straight about his philandering.
