COMING SOON: Andy Diggle & Stephen Segovia Descend into Valiant’s SHADOWMAN #1

Valiant announces the all-new SHADOWMAN #1 – the FIRST ISSUE of A POWERFUL NEW ONGOING SERIES from superstar writer Andy Diggle (Green Arrow: Year One, Daredevil) and powerhouse artist Stephen Segovia (Action Comics)!

In the epic tradition of X-O MANOWAR and BLOODSHOT REBORN, a staggering new beginning for Valiant’s supernatural icon starts here on March 28th with PART ONE of “FEAR OF THE DARK” – a tense and gripping three-issue introduction pushing Jack Boniface to the farthest edge of fear itself…and into a startling, adrenaline-fueled fight for survival as Shadowman takes command of the birthright he was born to uphold!

“It’s a story about stepping out of the shadows and embracing the light. Trying to move on from your own mistakes and be a better man. Of course, it's not easy,” said writer Andy Diggle. “As Shadowman, Jack will never fully be able to escape his own demons. It's about learning to live with them. And as he comes to a better understanding of himself and his family's legacy, he'll discover whole new worlds and new powers he never even imagined he had.”

Don’t fear your demons… Fight them! Orphaned at birth and raised on the margins of society, Jack Boniface never knew his place in the world. Until he discovered it waiting for him…in a darkness far older than the reign of men…

Unbeknownst to him, Jack was fated to become the next in a long lineage of Shadowmen – mortals bound to violent voodoo spirits of immense power – that could safeguard our world against incursions from realms beyond. For years, he struggled to control the loa’s murderous urges – a battle he eventually lost.

But now, after years of self-imposed exile, the man once known as Shadowman is returning home to sharpen the weapon within…and unleash a reckoning on the evils of our world that will soon send shockwaves through heaven and hell alike…

“Andy Diggle is a phenomenal new addition to Valiant, and he brings an incredible amount of vision and precision to his long-term plans for one of Valiant’s most seminal characters,” said Valiant Editor-in-Chief Warren Simons. “Together with the exceptional Stephen Segovia – who is delivering page after page of stunning, career-defining work on this series – this team is gearing up to unleash what will be one of Valiant’s most important series and a central new pillar for our publishing line.”

In the wake of “FEAR OF THE DARK”’s blockbuster-level gauntlet of action and intrigue across issues #1-3, SHADOWMAN will then continue in 2018 and beyond as Andy Diggle forges ahead with a riveting, two-year roadmap that will redefine the boundaries of Valiant’s paranormal underworld…and that together will encompass the most ambitious and fearsome Shadowman tale ever told.

“Make no mistake: SHADOWMAN #1 will be Valiant’s single most important monthly series launch of 2018,” said Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani. “Over the past year, we’ve dedicated a vast amount of time and resources to cementing tentpole series for our most beloved and demanded characters, and Shadowman has long been at the top of that list. This is one of the most vital, but as-yet unexplored, mythologies in the whole of the Valiant library. Together, Andy Diggle and Stephen Segovia are going to be leading off a massive slate of surprises – wait until you see the second arc! – that are going to make Shadowman an integral component of Valiant’s bold plans for the future.”

On March 28th, Shadowman storms to the forefront of the Valiant Universe…more powerful, more terrifying, and more relentless than ever before…in the all-new SHADOWMAN #1 – featuring covers by a stunning cast of artists, including Eisner Award nominee Tonci Zonjic (Who is Jake Ellis?), Renato Guedes (BLOODSHOT SALVATION, Wolverine), Juan José Ryp (BRITANNIA), and Travel Foreman (Animal Man, The Ultimates)!

PLUS: Valiant is rewarding fans who reserve the first arc of Valiant’s next essential ongoing series with specially expanded, limited editions of each issue in the SHADOWMAN #1-3 PRE-ORDER EDITION BUNDLE – available only as a pre-order set! Released monthly from March through May 2018, each Valiant PRE-ORDER EDITION comes packed with trade paperback-style extras and bonus content, including creator commentary, behind-the-scenes looks at the creation of the comics, process character designs and artwork, and first looks at upcoming issues – plus an exclusive cover by visionary artist Raúl Allén (SECRET WEAPONS) that can’t be found anywhere else!

The Best Comics of 2017

It's that time of year again. What comics site is complete without an obligatory "Best of 2017" list? No doubt it's been a crazy year in so many ways and the comic book industry is no different. But instead of concentrating on the scandals and controversies all that matters is the fruit of so many talented peoples' labor who've produced some amazing stories. These are just some of the best independent comics of 2017.

DISCLAIMER: [Editor's Note] Spartantown relies on the generosity of independent comic book publishers to provide review copies in order to post reviews. Thanks to companies like Image Comics, Valiant Entertainment, Archie Comics, Dynamite Comics, Black Mask Studios, Action Lab, and occasionally others, I've had access to some wonderful stories that otherwise I would have missed. I don't get review copies from mainstream publishers like DC Comics and Marvel so this "Best of..." list is far from comprehensive but a good sample …

REVIEW: 'Port of Earth' #3 by Zack Kaplan, Andrea Mutti, and Vladimir Popov

The hunt continues for a deadly rogue alien accused of killing a human. ESA agents Rice and McIntyre abide by different rules which make this pursuit a tense, precarious affair. A city on shut-down, a cop with a hair-trigger, and a showdown that could alter intergalactic diplomacy forever.

PORT OF EARTH #3
Writer: Zack Kaplan Artist: Andrea Mutti Publisher: Image Comics Release Date: January 10, 2018 Cover Price: $3.99
Score: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
'Port of Earth' continues to evolve from a savvy sci-fi premise to a thrilling cop drama to a thought-provoking commentary on American worker displacement and the otherness of aliens as an allegory for immigrants. It's not heavy-handed mind you but there are layers to Zack Kaplan's story. When you consider the seismic change an alien technology that helps turn water into an efficient and powerful energy source would have on the planet it's inevitable that it would set off a societal chain reaction. Especially for those displaced by…

WONDER WOMAN OF THE DAY: Fitness Model Gia Macool Embodies the Amazon Princess

The closest we'll ever get, probably, to superheroes in real life is through the great work of cosplayers. You see them at every pop culture convention from the very basic to extremely elaborate costume design. However, you don't have to be a cosplayer to enjoy dressing up as your favorite superhero from time to time. Take fitness model and entrepreneur Gia Macool for example. An accomplished fitness competitor and model, Macool is also a big fan of DC Comics' Wonder Woman. She shows her love of the iconic Amazon Princess in her fitness wear, meal prep accessories and even a full blown photo shoot in a Wonder Woman costume.

For decades comics have featured very muscular superheroes, male and female, epitomizing the human form at its strongest. So when bodybuilders and fitness pros decide to suit up as these costumed heroes, they are the embodiment of those fictional characters in the flesh. Macool looks like she stepped out of the pages of a Wonder Woman comic with a suit …
