REVIEW: 'The Last Siege' #1 by Landry Q. Walker, Justin Greenwood, and Eric Jones

Described as a "gritty medieval story," 'The Last Siege' introduces a mysterious stranger, a juvenile heir to the throne, and a kingdom as the sole holdout in a war against a conquering tyrant.

THE LAST SIEGE #1
Writer: Landry Q. Walker Artist: Justin Greenwood, Eric Jones Letterer: Patrick Brosseau Designed by Keith Wood Edited by Branwin Bigglestone Publisher: Image Comics Release Date: May 30, 2018 Cover Price: $3.99
Score: ★★1/2 (2.5/5)
First issues are vitally important. It's the first impression for a prospective reader and it can mean repeat business or one-and-done. Unfortunately, 'The Last Siege' by Landry Q. Walker, Justin Greenwood, and Eric Jones is a toss-up. It's a competently put together comic with great art, a promising premise but the debut doesn't grab you and make you yearn for more.
In a land ravaged by war by a powerful invader from across the sea, the last remaining castle has lost its king leaving his heir, an 11-year-ol…

REVIEW: 'We Are The Danger' #1 by Fabian Lelay, Claudia Aguirre, and Taylor Esposito

Julie Malliari is entering a new high school as a senior and quickly befriends Tabitha. Before you know it they're starting a band but Tabitha's rival is determined to derail her dreams. It's a familiar rock and roll origin story but it's fun and beautifully put together.

WE ARE THE DANGER
Written & Illustrated by Fabian Lelay Colored by: Claudia Aguirre Lettered by: Taylor Esposito
$3.99 | full color | teen
IN STORES MAY 30TH
Score: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
'We Are The Danger' may remind you of a line from 'Breaking Bad' but it's actually a fast-paced and lively story of teens putting a band together. The comparisons to Archie Comics' 'Josie and the Pussycats' and 'The Archies' will be inevitable but should be seen as a compliment. Writer and artist Fabian Lelay, colorist Claudia Aguirre, and letterer Taylor Esposito achieve a level of charm, chemistry, and camaraderie in a first issue that is rare.
Julie is a regular teen trying to make…

REVIEW: 'Shadowman' #3 by Andy Diggle, Stephen Segovia, Adam Pollina, Ulises Arreola, and David Baron

Shadowman is thrust back into the Deadside where he was trapped before but this time he's out to reclaim the weapon that could help him defeat the evil voodoo god Baron Samedi.

SHADOWMAN #3
Writer: Andy Diggle Artist: Stephen Segovia, Adam Pollina Publisher: Valiant Comics Release Date: May 23, 2018 Cover Price: $3.99
Score: ★★★★★ (5/5)
I consider Valiant Entertainment the home to the best action-adventure comics in the industry (including the Big Two). 'Shadowman' falls into that category too but adds voodoo magic and otherworldly villains. Jack Boniface aka Shadowman just returned to the land of the living from the Deadside and a fight with one of voodoo loa god Baron Samedi's minions has sent him back. His partner Alyssa Miles, an abettor to the Shadowman host, was still resentful for his disappearance before, having to protect New Orleans from mystical forces on her own and now has to do everything to bring him back. It's own giant mind game taking place in tw…

REVIEW: 'Skyward' #2 by Joe Henderson, Lee Garbett, and Antonio Fabela

'Skyward' debuted last month and it was such a pleasant surprise. The world has lost most of its gravity sending countless of people to their deaths as they floated away to space. A scientist father and his baby girl survive and twenty years later the world has adjusted. For Willa, it's the only life she's known but being tethered to her hometown has gotten stale. She wants to travel but her agoraphobic father has other ideas.

SKYWARD #2
Writer: Joe Henderson Artist: Lee Garbett, Antonio Fabela Letterer: Simon Bowland Editor: Rick Lopez, Jr. Publisher: Image Comics Release Date: May 23, 2018 Cover Price: $3.99
Score: ★★★★★ (5/5)
Joe Henderson's post-apocalyptic fantasy is a joy to read in part because of his protagonist Willa. Her joy and enthusiasm are infectious and as beautifully illustrated by Lee Garbett and Antonio Fabela, 'Skyward' is also a visual treat. As light and airy (pun intended) as the first issue was the brilliantly designed opening splash p…

REVIEW: 'Hit-Girl' #4 by Mark Millar, Ricardo Lopez Ortiz, and Sunny Gho

The first arc of 'Hit-Girl' wraps up as only Mark Millar can and that's with all guns blazing! Amid all the bloodshed and explosions, Millar finds a beating heart and a new beginning.

HIT-GIRL #4
Writer: Mark Millar Artist: Ricardo Lopez Ortiz Colors: Sunny Gho Lettered and Designed: Melina Mikulic
Editor: Rachel Fulton Publisher: Image Comics Release Date: May 23, 2018 Cover Price: $3.99
Score: ★★★★1/2 (4.5/5)

Four issue arcs can be hit or miss. Sometimes, it's not enough issues to develop characters sufficiently and still get a satisfying conclusion. While the main focus has been on Mindy coercing Mano to kill rival cartel members as well as his own, we finally get more info about the mysterious mother whose son was Mano's first kill. It's not a lot but enough to demonstrate how her pain, anger, and guilt led to hiring Mindy to get revenge. It ultimately leads to a surprisingly optimistic ending.

There is a method to Mindy's madness and while she may be …

REVIEW: 'Her Infernal Descent' #2 by Lonnie Nadler, Zac Thompson, and Kyle Charles

Lynn's journey through Hell to find her family bogs down in bureaucracy and other obstacles. Even her guide, the poet William Blake, is at times at a loss in ways to help her. It's a clever literary funhouse with some meaningful undertones.

HER INFERNAL DESCENT #2
Writer: Lonnie Nadler, Zac Thompson Artist: Kyle Charles, Dee Cunniffe Letterer: Ryan Ferrier Publisher: Aftershock Comics Release Date: May 23, 2018 Cover Price: $3.99
Score: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
For anyone who's spent time at the DMV and considered it Hell, languishing in long lines and dealing with rude or distracted clerks, you'll recognize the Hell Lynn has to deal with when she pushes her way to the front of the line to speak to the judge, novelist Franz Kafka. She's desperate to find the location of her dearly departed family but finds little help in this congested and unforgiving dimension. The DMV only feels like eternal damnation whereas Lynn is living it unless she gets some help.

While 'Her Inferna…
